A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
